Landscape Architecture as it should be...
Creative solutions, quality work, and long term relationships

Landscape architecture, planning and project management is more than a pretty picture. It is about creating places for people to pursue life, knowledge, and happiness. Our mission is to shape landscapes for our clients where art meets science, where beauty is felt as much as seen, where function and budget are considered, and where context, history, and environment matter.

Shaping Landscapes

for Living and Learning

The Campus

Each campus, as a unique collection of structures, landscapes, vehicles, and people, is a complex, dynamic place. Whether educational institutions, corporate headquarters, canine facilities, or retail centers, we enhance and engage the mission, purpose, people and activities of the campus, and the environment for living and learning in order to create an attractive, functional, and unified landscape..

The Community

Landscapes form the fabric of community. Downtowns, streetscapes, parks, ball fields, arenas, hospitals, and commons are spaces where citizens come together to share life experiences. With the efforts of communities, non-profit groups, and companies, our master plans, site designs, and built works bring communities together to live and learn.

The Home & Garden

The Home & Garden is one's sanctuary; the place where people establish roots, raise families, and experience life. From large estates to backyard patios, our designs enhance the "home" experience, connect interior and exterior spaces, and provide outdoor living opportunities.

Landscape Architecture

“The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.”
  - William James

Process & Approach

From the beginning of any project, we focus on gaining an understanding of the client's needs, the history of the place, the activities of people, and the characteristics of the site. With strong design principles, experience, research, experimentation, and imaginative thinking, A.T. Leonard & Associates works diligently through the design and permiting process to create unique, beautiful, budget conscience, and effective master plan and site design solustions.

“Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.” - Louis I. Kahn

To develop a design, we explore the details that enhance the design and select materials with the proper balance of aesthetic, function, and budget. Documentation of the design provides a set of drawings that serve as the basis of communications during construction. We take pride in creating precise documents expressing the design and minimizing change orders.

The construction phase is a critical, often overlooked, part of the design process. A solid contractor and designer team enhances the design, controls costs, and brings the project from paper into a stunning built landscape.

Team & Collaboration

To bring any project from concept to completion requires collaboration between the client, the design team, and the construction team. Whether the manager or a member, A. T. Leonard & Associates excels at teamwork and guiding the team forward towards the goal of an attractive, functional, and cost-effective landscape.

A. T. Leonard & Associates is structured to be nimble and responsive to the challenges of each project through the process of team creation and a wide range of quality and creative experts.

“It is a pleasure to work with Andrew as he brings an appreciation and understanding of the college campus environment to the design process.”          - Jay Bry, VP Fitchburg State University

The Studio

We believe shaping landscapes from the concept through construction requires personal commitment... teamwork... vision... organization... precision... creativity... knowledge. These characteristics define A. T. Leonard & Associates' approach to each project and our relationships with our clients. Every project undertaken by A. T. Leonard & Associates is personally designed and directed by Andrew Leonard with the assistance of his team and associates.

On the Farm
A barn style structure on Trotting Winds Farm serves as the base of design activities for A. T. Leonard & Associates. Designing from a classic New England landscape while being connected to the earth provides inspiration and perspective to the landscapes. With such a beautiful setting, going to work is never a problem. At Trotting Winds Farm, Andrew and his wife, Heather, are reviving the farm and raising blueberries and Nigerian Dwarf Goats for goats milk soap and cheese.

“No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden” - Thomas Jefferson

In the Studio
In the studio, A. T. Leonard & Associates engages the process of developing design solutions for the client's program through research, experimentation, diligence, and creativity. The studio serves as the workshop for crafting and critiquing our designs. We use multiple design media as tools to enhance the design process, explore designs in three dimensions, and express our ideas to others.

On the Ground
The Studio is not the only place for design work. A designer's understanding of the site and presence in the field is critical to quality installations, managing construction budgets, and communication with the construction team. We believe visions need to be guided from an idea on paper into the built work.
